Hi and welcome to Circle K International of HELP University College!

Circle K International is a collegiate service organization with a worldwide membership that promotes fellowship, leadership, and service.

Although each Circle K club is sponsored by a Kiwanis club, college and university students govern the organization on all levels.
A board of officers on the district level, and an International Board of Trustees comprise the leadership teams.

Our Mission :
Developing college and university students into a global network of responsible citizens and leaders with a lifelong commitment to service.

Service Mission:
Above all else, CKI is a service organization whose members are dedicated to improving their schools and communities.
Virtually any unanswered need is a potential opportunity for Circle K commitment and dedication.

The CKI Service Initiative, Focusing on the Future: Children, was designed to involve all Circle K members in projects that address the problems and issues that face children worldwide, ages six-13.
Through personal interaction and public awareness, Circle K members are enabling children to develop the skills and ideals necessary to be successful.

A little about the past:

In 1936, the Kiwanis Club of Pullman, Washington, established “Circle K House” at Washington State College, which was rented to young men who needed assistance to attend college.
For ten years the "Circle K House" became affiliated with a Greek letter organization, although it continued to be sponsored by the Pullman Kiwanis Club.

Eleven years later in 1947, Circle K transitioned from a fraternity to a service-oriented organization.
That year, during September, the first Circle K club similar to our present day organization, was chartered at Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois.

In 1949, two more clubs were organized, including one in Canada, making Circle K international.
There were 147 Circle K clubs in 1955, when Circle K was officially recognized as a sponsored organization of Kiwanis International.

Here at HELP University College our regular meeting time would be on every Wednesday from 12.30p.m to 2p.m.
However the venue varies from time to time.

WHY WE LOVE CHILDREN

She asked him if it was dead or alive.
"Dead." She was informed.
"How do you know?" she asked her pupil.
"Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move," answered the child innocently.
"You did WHAT?!?" the teacher exclaimed in surprise.
"You know," explained the boy, "I leaned over and went 'Pssst!' and it didn't move."

Five minutes later....
"Da-ad...."
"What?
"I'm thirsty. Can you bring drink of water?"
"No. You had your chance. Lights out."

"I told you NO!" If you ask again, I'll have to spank you!!"
Five minutes later......
"Daaaa-aaaad....."
"WHAT!"
"When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of water?"

One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part of the story where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer.
She read, "...and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"
The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that farmer said?"
One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy crap! A talking chicken!'"
The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes

Health Care and Nutrition

• Measles, malaria and diarrhea are three of the biggest killers of children — yet all are preventable or treatable

All these while, this is my feelings when I come across people like those but after this day

I pray that those who waste their life to do nothing and do not appreciate life to realize just how much they have in life.

9 of our members (inclusive of our faculty adviser) went on a visit to Taman Sinar Harapan at Kuala Kubu Bharu.

Members arrived right on time (8 a.m) at the pick up point. We journeyed to the Kiwanis Job Training Centre to pick up other members of Kiwanis and also fellow friends from the Aktion Club. It is not before long the quiet bus which only consist of 9 passengers was more than lively.

The journey to Kuala Kubu Bharu took approximately an hour and a half.







The journey to Taman Sinar Harapan cannot be described as a smooth journey since the roads are winding and bumpy. I really wonder how deep can the home located in Kuala Kubu Bharu at that moment.



Upon arrival, we unloaded our supply of adult diapers and some food from the bus and headed to the hall.





We were first briefed by the person in charge as of how the home operates and the different characteristic of the people who are living there and how they are taken care of.

Taman Sinar Harapan is a government sponsored home for people who suffered from mental and physical disability. According to the briefing, over 80% of the inmates are unable to make any movement and can only be lying on the bed.



Some inmates has to be tied up using cloth strips because they are suffering from hyper active and even try to hurt themselves. The attendants tried their best to shape obedience among them but failed to do so hence they have no alternatives but to tie them up.

The facilitator also mentioned that some of the inmates are still able to control themselves and allowed to move about around the center. However there are some who refuse to listen to instructions and acts beyond control so they have to either tie them up or restraint the area of movement in a dorm.

He also hope that we understand if we see or smell anything unpleasant since the inmates behavior is unpredictable and most of them are unable to control their bladder. The unfortunate part is, only 2 attendant is assigned to look after 30 or more inmates in a dorm. The attendants have my salute and respect for being such a saint. Bravo and please receive my deep bow..




After the briefing we headed of to the first dorm which is Asrama Teratai, inmates there are mostly children and as the briefing describes. Most of them are unable to even make a gesture to welcome or even a sign to acknowledge our presence. Only a few is able to stand up and say Hi to us.

The children are placed on a bed with high railings and some does not even have mattress to begin with. Noticing the kids condition and some even tied the a corner of the bed, solitude begins fill our hearts yet there is nothing much we can do but to smile and shake their hands.

Taking photos in the dorm is prohibited so there will be no photos of the inmates inside the dorm. I was able to take a shot of the food the inmates eats. It was basically a big lump of rice with fish meat mixed together. There is not a slight sense of appetizing but still.. they have no choice..



We then visited a place where some inmates who has talent and is still able to be shaped are placed. They do paintings with their feet and sell their postcards for a living and some are even capable of doing some small repairs for the wheel chair.





The next dorm is where some of the problematic inmates were placed, a kid who seems completely normal had his hands and legs tied to the bed to restraint his movement. He seems aggressive and tries to spit at anyone who tries to touch him. Believe me it was no pleasant view to see them suffer like that.

We were then brought to a dorm where adults was placed and immediately we can sense the unpleasant aroma but at the same time I wanted to know the condition of the inmates so the others and I stepped in. The are about the same as the children, even as a human of age they are incapable of speech or even movement; lying there side by side.

Collegiate Ambassador for Peace is a project jointly organised by Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) and Pure Love True Family malaysia for World Peace (PLTF).

Background
The Collegiate Ambassadors for Peace (CAP) is a part of a global network of student leaders that cultivates true leadership in youth towards building a word of true peace. The objectives for this initiative are to provide our student and youth leaders’ continuous and consistent leadership skills enhancement based on the following three perspectives:
1. Encouraging national unity
2. Inculcating leaders of character
3. Promoting family values
4. Building the culture of service

Objectives
· To cultivate true leadership among student leaders and create awareness of their roles and moral responsibilities in nation building and for the harmony of the world.
· To develop a common understanding of the universal principles and core value that guides the works of youths in nation building.
· To cultivate understanding if national integration and establish enduring relationship among youths who are multi-races and multi-religious.
· To forge mutually-beneficial relationships among the students of the different colleges, university colleges and universities for future collaborations.

Date: 3rd & 4th of May 2008
Venue: near Petaling Jaya Heights
Payment: RM50-60 (to be confirmed) for lodging, transport and food.
Benefits: leadership training, close to nature(part of the module), appointed as new Collegiate Ambassador for Peace, etc.
